Cmd. David John Sperling
Cmd. David John Sperling 78 years old from Pensacola, Florida Attack Squadron 153 April 3, 1929 - March 17, 2008
U.S. Navy
From the citation upon being awarded the Silver Star: The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Commander David John Sperling (NSN: 0-555189), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as the Pilot of a jet aircraft while attached to Attack Squadron ONE HUNDRED FIFTY-THREE (VA-153), embarked in U.S.S. CORAL SEA (CVA-43). On 25 October 1967, Commander Sperling flew as a major group leader in a coordinated Air Wing assault on the Phuc Yen Air Base near Hanoi, North Vietnam. Being the prime operating base for MiG fighter aircraft, Phuc Yen was defended by the most concentrated and formidable array of surface-to-air missiles, anti-aircraft artillery and automatic weapons to be found in all of North Vietnam. Courageously leading his group of attack aircraft over 120 miles of hostile territory into this bastion of defensive armor, Commander Sperling exhibited outstanding airmanship and unwavering determination while maneuvering for the highly vulnerable attack position. In spite of the unprecedented barrage of surface-to-air missiles and anti-aircraft fire, he calmly established the essential bombing pattern and delivered his ordnance with exceptional accuracy on the revetted enemy airplanes to destroy or damage several parked MiG aircraft. His resolute actions and professional skill set the tone for the remainder of his force and succeeded in turning a potentially disastrous situation into a highly successful assault on the enemy. Commander Sperling's gallant and inspirational leadership upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. Cmd. Sperling's obituary.

2011 Best In Show

I love other people’s dogs.  They’re just a little too high maintenance for me.  My daughter got me interested in the Westminster Dog Show when we first had cable way back when.  This beauty is the winner of Best In Show this year.  The ribbons and trophies are pretty impressive, too.  Info below is from this website.

The 2011 Best In Show Trophy was awarded to "GCH Foxcliffe Hickory Wind" a.k.a. "Hickory," a Scottish Deerhound.

Robert Raymond Scott joined the U.S. Navy in 1938. Was was assigned to the U.S.S. California and was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. On December 7, 1941 the California was hit by a torpedo during the attack. While other personnel were evacuated, Machinist's Mate First Class Scott remained at his station. He didn't survive. For his actions he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. And the U.S. Navy named the destroyer escort USS Scott (DE-214) in his honor in 1943.
From his citation:
For conspicuous devotion to duty, extraordinary courage and complete disregard of his own life, above and beyond the call of duty, during the attack on the Fleet in Pearl Harbor by Japanese forces on 7 December 1941. The compartment, in the U.S.S. California, in which the air compressor, to which Scott was assigned as his battle station, was flooded as the result of a torpedo hit. The remainder of the personnel evacuated that compartment but Scott refused to leave, saying words to the effect "This is my station and I will stay and give them air as long as the guns are going."

I Love lolcats!

OK, so it’s a tiny pig not a cat.  Isn’t he just adorable?  And I really love the caption that’s a takeoff on the movie Babe.

Infinite Cat Project Challenge

Friday, February 11, 2011 2

Have those of you owned by cats found The Infinite Cat Project yet?  Have you submitted your furry master’s picture?  If you have, please put the link in the comments so I can go see him/her.  If you haven’t you might want to do it.

This is kitty #22 - Jackie watching Tiger watching Farrusko...

All you have to do is bring up the most recent cat – 1705 as of the writing of this post – and take a picture of your cat looking at the screen and submit it.  Simple right?  Then go look at the other pictures and say “Oh, this one is so cute” until you realize it’s 3:30AM and you have to go to work in the morning.

I had to let my cats go live with someone else so I don’t have a lovely feline to snap a picture of.  But if you have one please accept this challenge.  Take a picture of Midnight or Hobbes or Fluffy or Daisy looking at the latest cat in the project.  Then go to The Infinite Cat Project and submit your baby’s picture.  Finally, please leave a link to it in the comments so I can go coo over it.

Vince Lombardi

Monday, February 07, 2011 1

If you aren’t way up here in the Boomer generation with me, this is probably what you think of when you hear the name Lombardi.

image

But I have different memories associated with that name.  When I was a kid I loved to watch football with my dad.  He was a Detroit Lions fan, but even more he was a fan of The Great Vince Lombardi.  You may not always see it capitalized like that, but that’s how you say it.   Capitalized.  In a reverent voice.

image

I remember him as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 1959 to 1967.  Dad admired him because he believed in discipline, excellence, and commitment.  Dad believed in those things, too.  This Lombardi quote embodies Dad.

“You don’t do things right once in a while…you do them right all the time.”

Oh, yeah, the Vince Lombardi Super Bowl Trophy when home to Green Bay last night.

So Thankful For New Windows

Thursday, February 03, 2011 0

We went thru some major home renovations in November and December of 2010.  It was exciting and stressful and wonderful and SUCH a mess.  But we survived it and are loving our changes.  We had all new windows installed, some roof repair done, painted everywhere on the main floor and replaced all the carpeting on that floor with a beautiful walnut laminate.

Today I’m extremely excited about our new windows.  Here’s why.

DSC01707

It’s not because I can see out to the woods thru them.  It’s because a full day and a half after we received 20 inches of snow there is still snow on the edge of the window!  Our old windows leaked like crazy.  I could easily feel a draft around all the entire window but especially where the two windows came together.  We never had snow accumulate on the old windows like this.  It always melted too fast.  This is so amazing!  It’s also why we’re much more comfortable inside this winter.

I’m so thankful for our new windows.  What are you thankful for today?
